A right-angle prism is an optical prism with a right-angle corner, usually used to divert the light path or to deflect the image formed by the optical system by 90°, depending on the orientation of the prism, the image can be the same as the left and right and upside down, or left and right is not the same as the top and bottom. It can also be used for applications such as conjugate images and beam deflection.
A right-angle prism utilizes the critical angle property to efficiently internally total reflect incident light, which is one of its basic functions. When used, a right-angle prism is usually coated with some optical film.
